    Allagash White 4pk

    $8.79

    Portland, Maine

100 Points/World Class, The Allstrom Brothers, Beer Advocate: ...Cloudy pale yellow in colour with a creamy big bubbled lace that shows no problem of retaining...An extravagant spicy mix and a touch of lemon hit the nose sharp. Coriander and orange peel are evident as well as an earthy yeast. Taste: Crisp and a bit smooth with a moderate body and medium carbonation. Soft flavours of barley and wheat are cut by a flare of spiciness, coriander is a bit dominant. The orange peel is a touch bitter with a soft rind like flavour. A little touch of fruit (pear & plum), yeast and a dash of hop bitterness in the finish. The fermented wheat provides a lingering spiciness that fades slowly in the semi-dry finish.

    Baileaux, Belgium

97 Points/World Class, The Allstrom Brothers, Beer Advocate: Soft powdery mouth feel with a crisp carbonation and medium body. Smooth. Very evident clove flavour up front and stays around throughout the beer. Hints of birch and ginger beer-like flavours, peppery medcinal phenols and light herbal tea hop flavour. Quite malty but it stays in the back. Fruitiness is likened to a delicate date sweetness and ripe plum. As the beer warms, there's also a suggestion of chocolate/carob. Finish dries a little though still a bit of residual sweetness leftover, herbal flavours also.

94 Points/Outstanding, The Allstrom Brothers, Beer Advocate: Appearance: Rich golden hue with a faint haze from the yeast, decent lacing but has trouble sticking.

Smell: Dry doughy cookie like aroma similar to a mild biscotti, some dried fruit also. Mild phenolic in the back with hints of anise and black pepper.

Taste: Crisp and lively, the carbonation is at a medium to high level and kneaded right into the light body. Spicy and peppery with an abundance of phenols and an underlying character of alcohol. Dry malt flavour with a mild fruitiness to complement it, hops are there with a bite and the yeast throws a nuttiness that lasts far into the finish. Fruitiness is a tad peachy but like dried peaches. Spiciness from the phenols and alcohol linger and clean the palate. Alcohol starts to become more of a presence as the beer warms with a faint solvent and flexed estery showing.

Notes: Spicy and quite flamboyant, that is just what I want in my Belgian Pale Strong Ale. Perhaps a little over the top but there is nothing wrong with that. Complex and flailing with wild flavors.

100th Percentile, Ratebeer.com; 94 Points, Beverage Testing Institute | Brewer's Notes: Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

    $9.99

    Belgium

98th Percentile, Ratebeer.com; 97 Points, Wine Enthusiast; "World Classic," Michael Jackson | Brewer's Notes: Grand Cru by RODENBACH has on average been left for much longer in the oak casks ("folders") of the Roeselare "beer cathedral," which results in a more pronounced version of the "Flanders Red-Brown Beer" style. RODENBACH Grand Cru consists of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 beer matured two years in oak. The result is a complex beer with a great deal of wood and esters, vinous and with a very long aftertaste, just like a Grand Cru wine.

94 Points/Outstanding, The Allstrom Brothers, Beer Advocate: Massive white froth, head retention reaches epic proportions. Mild haze within the pale hue. Herbal, grassy, tart, grainy, funky, fresh ... quite the aroma. Smooth, fluffy mouthfeel. Mild tartness, funk is pleasing with earthy tones. Lots of hop flavor and some bitterness. Herbal with that rustic Saison tone throughout. Old school flavors with a new twist. I really dig this brew.

Goes well with dishes that do not have too intensive a flavor, especially that Bavarian speciality 'Weisswurst' or white sausage.

98 Points, Beverage Testing Institute: Cloudy sunset orange color with a fine blanket of eggshell white foam. Attractive aromas of orange marmalade on multigrain bread and peach soufflé with a supple, fruity medium-full body and a long, rich, tightly knit fabric of herbs, peppery spices, honey, fruits, minerals, and radishes on the finish. An amazing tripel that sets the benchmark for the style.
